London-born Ayman Oghanna is a journalist, photographer and broadcaster who specialises in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, conflict and migration. Born and raised in London, he has Iraqi and Irish roots and is now based in Greece. He is best known for his coverage of the fight against the so-called Islamic State.

After earning an MA in International Relations and Middle East Studies (First-Class Honours) from the University of St. Andrews, Ayman worked for The Daily Star newspaper in Lebanon before leaving to study journalism at Columbia University in New York, where he gained an M.S. degree.

For 13 years, Ayman has produced award-winning multimedia reportage, often alone, under challenging circumstances and to tight deadlines. He has worked in Ukraine, Poland, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Tunisia, Georgia, Germany, Sweden, Kosovo, Turkey, Israel-Palestine. Ayman was the first journalist to enter the Iraqi city of Hit with Iraqi special forces after more than two years of so-called Islamic State rule, with the first troops to liberate Mosul and, also, the first foreign journalist to reach Mount Sinjar by land during the Yezidi genocide.

Winner of the Grand Format Prize at the Bayeux Calvados Award for War Correspondents, American Photo Award, the Inaugural Richard Beeston Bursary, and one of Magnum Photos final winning photographers in their 30 under 30 contest.

A multimedia journalist, he has produced print, photo, digital, TV, radio and magazine stories for a variety of clients, including: The New York Times, The Washington Post, BBC, NBC, Newsweek, VICE, The Times of London, Liberation, STERN, Al Jazeera, National Geographic, The Guardian, The Wall Street Journal, The Sunday Telegraph, Euronews, and The Economist’s Digital Magazine- 1843.

He is proud to be a founding member of the Frontline Freelance Register, dedicated to protecting and uniting freelance journalists reporting in foreign countries and conflict zones.
